The boredom thing—I totally get what you mean. I don’t know why non-runners (at least the non-runners I know) assume we run out of things to think about. Like, are you kidding, I’ll run out of race before I run out of things to think about!

Out of curiosity, where did you get the 8,000 number for the calories? That seems like a lot for a 13-14-hour race.

So that was on the basis of usually burning about a hundred calories per mile on a run, plus the usual day's calories, although it took all day so maybe that was a high estimate. But in fact my watch, if you can trust it, tells me I burnt 8300 in the end!

Ah, got it, so based on burned calories. I don’t think you’re supposed to replenish 100% of that, though. The number I’ve read is 30% to 40% (I can’t find the source right now, I think it was Jason Koop’s book).

That said, if it worked for you and you didn’t have any GI issues, you should ignore me and do what works! I hope you had fun!
